“After my first full listen-through, there were only 2 songs that I can say I just don’t like.

The first song that rubbed me the wrong way was “Remember December.” I’d seen a Wal-Mart Soundcheck performance Demi did prior to the album release and even then I didn’t care for this song. I feel like her vocals are strained at the beginning and I find the chorus pretty much irritating. You know how there’s always that one song that requires the album booklet to decipher the lyrics? This is it. I have no idea what she’s saying through most of it.

The next let down for me was “Gift of a Friend.” Just by the title I was terrified. I’m not one to really like cheesy songs unless they’re particularly catchy or actually move me, emotionally. However, this was just plain out cheesy. Songs containing phrases like “when you open your heart & believe in the gift of a friend” generally turn me off. However, on a more positive note, her vocals were absolutely outstanding in this song, which was kind of the redeeming factor. Now onto the gems…

I’m picky about sappy love songs and slow ballads, but “Catch Me” was both of those things and I enjoyed it. The lyrics were honest and vulnerable, as were most on the rest of the album, but the minimal effects really made this beautiful. Fortunately for me, there’s also an amazing pick up towards the end. The ballad turns into a great, catchy, pop song, surprisingly.

Next is “Every Time You Lie,” a jazzy, Maroon 5-esque song about empowerment and not taking any crap from a cheating partner. I really appreciated the different sound and fantastic vocals in this song, as opposed to Demi’s usual belted out rock anthem. This is definitely a favorite of mine.

“Got Dynamite” is another favorite. Another song about taking control, Got Dynamite is going to get you headbanging. The beat is heavy and Demi’s sultry voice just makes you want to dance. I think the song reminds me somewhat of “I love Rock n’ Roll.” The lyrics are powerful, and I think this is a great song for girls everywhere who know they’re not just some computer that can be hacked, as the song says. It’s just a feel good song that’ll be on repeat for me!

Of course, I couldn’t finish this review without mentioning the single, “Here We Go Again.” For those of you who are familiar with Demi’s first album, I feel like this is the new “Get Back.” It’s a love song, but not a love song. It’s not your typical rock anthem, but it kind of is. I don’t know. I just love it and I don’t think I’m alone. This is the song you blast in your car, windows down, summer wind blowing through your hair. It’s just great :]

So overall, I have to say this album was quite good. It’s full of little surprises – Demi’s vocals have improved beyond belief, the lyrics are honest but clever, and the style variety was a pleasant surprise, at least to me. It’s evident that Demi has grown as an artist, and judging by her lyrics, as a person. At 16, her musicality is definitely beyond the average teenager. I really enjoyed listening to this album and recommend it to anyone who liked the first, or just likes feel good music with relatable lyrics and catchy tunes.”
